Welcome Dr. Andrew Haveles! Posted on September 28th, 2016 by

This year, Julie is serving as an Associate Provost and Dean of Sciences and Education.  Thankfully, Dr. Andrew Haveles has joined our team for the year!  He’ll be teaching Sedimentary Systems (commonly known as Sed/Strat) and Evolution of the Earth, in addition to some Our Planet labs.

Andrew has done fascinating research on small mammal ecology on the Great Plains, and reconstructing paleoclimate and paleoenvironments from various fossil and geochemical clues. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from Syracuse University, and in 2015 earned his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.  In 2015-16 he taught in the geology department at Macalester College, and his friendly and inquisitive approach has already perked up our basement hallways. In keeping with Julie’s habit, he recently transported a long core to Gustavus from the Minnesota Geological Survey, letting our students get awesome hands-on experience logging real core.  See how much fun Kyle Pinke (’17) and Casey Decker (’17) are having?
