Last summer, local artist Kay Helms spent a day with Laura and her summer research students in the field. Some of the photographs she took became part of a traveling Smithsonian exhibit at the Nicollet County Historical Society focused on water. Now, the photos hang in the Chester A. Johnson Geology Museum on the first floor of Nobel Hall, right across from our mammoth tusk and 200-million year old brachiopods! There’s a nice blog post about that collaboration here:
Local Artist’s Photographs on Display in Gustavus Geology Museum
For those of you who haven’t been to Nobel Hall recently, our students have made tremendous improvements to the displays and interactivity of the museum. For a short (and admittedly unprofessional-grade!) video tour, go to YouTube here:
This year we have three student docents: Russ Krueger (’17), Kenzie Perry (’18) and Abby Michels (’18). They hold regular ‘office hours’ in the museum, and have participated in many outreach activities like hosting elementary school groups. Kenzie is also the museum curator, so she is busy creating new displays and keeping things looking awesome. During this year’s Nobel Conference we had a lot of visitors, who are always particularly drawn to the stream table (photo below). Thank you, docents, for being on hand during the whole conference to give our guests this fun experience!
